Singapore Unveils Smart Nation 2.0: S$120 Million AI Push
Singapore is doubling down on its digital future. A decade after launching its ambitious Smart Nation initiative, the city-state has unveiled Smart Nation 2.0 a refreshed national strategy designed to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI), strengthen digital infrastructure, and create a safer and more inclusive online environment.
Announced by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong on October 1, 2024, the next phase of Singapore’s digital transformation is built around three core pillars — Trust, Growth, and Community — reflecting the nation’s commitment to ensuring technology serves both economic progress and social well-being.
“Technology is evolving rapidly, and so must we,” Wong said, positioning Smart Nation 2.0 as Singapore’s blueprint for navigating the opportunities and challenges of the AI era.
A S$120 Million Bet on AI-Powered Innovation
At the heart of Smart Nation 2.0 is a major investment in artificial intelligence.
The Singapore government will commit S$120 million (approximately US$92 million) to a new AI for Science initiative, led by the National Research Foundation (NRF). The program aims to accelerate scientific breakthroughs by integrating AI into research across multiple disciplines.
From advanced materials and biomedical sciences to healthcare and emerging technologies, researchers will be equipped with cutting-edge AI tools to enhance productivity, uncover new discoveries, and solve complex challenges faster than ever before.
The initiative also seeks to cultivate a new generation of interdisciplinary talent — researchers who are fluent in both AI and scientific domains — while expanding collaborations between Singapore-based institutions and leading international partners.
As generative AI continues to reshape industries worldwide, Wong described the technology as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” capable of transforming economies, businesses, and societies.
Preparing the Next Generation for an AI-Driven World
Singapore’s AI ambitions extend beyond research labs.
Beginning in 2025, the government will launch the Smart Nation Educator Fellowship, a six-month program designed to help educators stay ahead of emerging digital trends and integrate AI-related knowledge into classroom learning.
Students will also gain greater exposure to AI through a new “AI for Fun” initiative, which encourages hands-on experimentation and creative problem-solving using artificial intelligence technologies.
By introducing AI education at multiple levels, Singapore aims to build a future-ready workforce equipped with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital economy.
Building a More Resilient Digital Infrastructure
As societies become more dependent on digital services, resilience has become just as important as innovation.
To address this challenge, Singapore plans to introduce a new Digital Infrastructure Act in 2025. The proposed legislation will strengthen protections for critical digital systems and services that underpin the nation’s economy and public sector.
Importantly, the law will go beyond traditional cybersecurity concerns.
It will address a broader spectrum of risks, including technical misconfigurations, system failures, fire hazards, cooling system breakdowns, and other operational threats that could disrupt essential digital infrastructure.
The move underscores Singapore’s recognition that digital resilience is now a key component of national security and economic stability.
New Agency to Tackle Online Harms and Cyberbullying
Alongside infrastructure and innovation, Smart Nation 2.0 places a strong emphasis on online safety.
The government plans to establish a dedicated agency tasked with combating online harms, including cyberbullying, digital harassment, and other forms of harmful online behavior.
Backed by new legislation, the agency will be able to act on behalf of victims, directing perpetrators and online platforms to stop harmful activities quickly. Victims will also gain stronger legal avenues to pursue civil remedies against offenders.
The initiative reflects Singapore’s broader effort to ensure that technological progress is accompanied by stronger protections for individuals in digital spaces.

While AI and digital innovation dominate the agenda, Wong stressed that Smart Nation 2.0 is ultimately about people.
The government will continue investing in digital inclusion programs to ensure that no segment of society is left behind as technology becomes increasingly integrated into daily life.
Efforts will also focus on using technology to strengthen communities, preserve cultural identity, and foster meaningful social connections.
“Smart Nation 2.0 is a whole-of-nation movement,” Wong said. “Every Singaporean has a role to play in building a thriving digital future.”
